Review: 2016 Ford Explorer continues to soften the SUV experience

Now, for 2016, Ford substantially upgrades the Explorer, revising the styling, improving the ride and handling, installing a new turbocharged engine option, offering additional convenience technologies, and debuting a luxury-lined Platinum trim level.

The power of choice

Ford offers three sophisticated and fuel-efficient powertrain choices for the 2016 Explorer. On lower-spec models, a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower is standard, with a new 280-horsepower, turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder available as an option. Despite losing two cylinders and 10 horsepower, the smaller turbocharged engine is the better choice because it provides more get-up-and-go at low engine speeds, and is expected to provide better fuel economy.

In my opinion, the most desirable of the Explorer’s power plants is the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 in the Sport and new Platinum models. It makes a whopping 365 horsepower, and it comes with standard all-wheel drive.
